Hikes

Hunter Logging Road

It was a beautiful so-called ‘false spring’ day – “so-called” as it was technically winter in BC. The weather forecast anticipated double-digit temperatures and clear skies, and for me, that was motivation enough to venture out on a hike. Between my husband and I, I’m usually the one who plans our activities, but this time he surprised me with his selection – Hunter Logging Road, a 7.7km out-and-back trail that was once a local secret but in recent years has become increasingly popular. For a sneak peek, check out our video below.

The trail is located in the Steelhead area of the rural district of Mission. Private property borders the road leading to this hidden gem, which unlike many other trails, is not officially part of a Park. The trailhead is tucked way and marked by a forest service road with a metal gate and a small gravel parking lot.

The steep incline in the first kilometer was quite challenging, but the path soon flattened out. We followed the gravel road, keeping left as we climbed, marveling at the beautiful forest scenery and how peaceful it was. It truly felt like spring, and we saw very little snow on the edge of the pathway as we ascended.

After an hour, we reached the viewpoint, where we were treated to panoramic views of Stave Lake. It was a clear, sunny day and we basked in the sunshine for almost an hour, relishing the breathtaking views. Soon it was time to go, and we began our journey back to the parking lot, doing our best to be mindful of loose rocks during the steep parts of the descent.

The entire trip had taken us just less than 3 hours, including the time we spent relaxing at the viewpoint. It was a day well spent in beautiful BC.
